Code of Conduct

We believe that a supportive and respectful environment allows learners to thrive. Families agree to our Code of Conduct upon joining, and learners play an active role in shaping our shared values through a thoughtful child-led social contract. Together, these tools reflect our collective commitment to respect, kindness, and responsibility. We prioritize restoration whenever possible.

We expect learners to:

  • Have kind and thoughtful behavior (physical aggression, foul language, or bullying will not be tolerated).

  • Be respectful and follow the directions of the person in charge.

  • Show up ready to learn—this means bringing their backpacks and supplies each day.

  • Participate and do their personal best.

  • Use electronic devices responsibly—phones and watches may be brought to Co-op but should be unused during the day. If a learner needs to contact a parent or guardian, they should go through the person in charge.

  • Approach sensitive or emotionally charged topics such as politics and religion with respect and emotional awareness. Learners should not impose their views on others and should be mindful of the diverse perspectives within our community. Parents/guardians share responsibility for guiding their children in how to engage in these conversations thoughtfully and appropriately.

  • Remain in designated supervised areas on the property and help maintain a safe environment; weapons or drugs of any kind are not permitted.

Additionally, participants are expected to communicate with peers in a respectful and appropriate manner across all forms of communication, including digital platforms. Co-op and parents/guardians share responsibility for helping learners navigate behavior that affects the community. If behavior outside of co-op, including online communication or texting, negatively impacts the safety, well-being, or learning environment within co-op, leadership may address the matter in partnership with families.

To support this Code of Conduct, our Disciplinary Action Plan is designed to provide structure, encourage accountability, and offer guidance when challenges arise. This is about creating a safe, nurturing environment where learners can grow. Of course, not every mistake requires formal action, as outlined in the plan—mistakes are a natural part of learning and growing—and co-op is a great place to learn how to navigate those moments!
